A cow with tripe slogan

What a load of [hugely nutritional for dogs] tripe!

What is tripe?

Tripe is the name for the edible lining of the stomach of a grazing animal. This is usually cow, but can be sheep, deer, ox, and even antelope. It is hugely popular in Italian cooking, and can be found in dishes from Mexico, India, Portugal and others. It’s flavour is described as ‘mild liver’, but we’ll let you be the judge!

Tripe for human consumption is cleaned to make it safe to eat. ‘Green tripe’ on the other hand, is completely natural, and has not been cleaned or bleached, which can damage the nutritional profile of tripe. Green tripe is the type of tripe that is perfect for a raw dog food diet.

Is tripe good for dogs?

A cow’s digestive system is complex, as their stomachs have four chambers which systematically break down grass with digestive enzymes, gastric juices and amino acids. These enzymes, gastric juices and amino acids are very nutritious for dogs as they contribute to a dog’s own digestion as well as the health of other body functions.

Green tripe also contains Lactic Acid Bacteria, known as Lactobacillus Acidophilus, which is the main ingredient in probiotics and promotes stomach health. It also has the perfect ratio of calcium to phosphorus (1:1), with the lower phosphorous content being ideal for dogs with liver and kidney problems as well as ideal percentages of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. As if that wasn’t enough, tripe is packed with iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, copper, manganese and selenium.

Tripe is considered a complete protein source for dogs, meaning that it contains all 10 of the essential amino acids that dogs need to consume as part of their diet. All in all, high-quality green tripe is a fantastic option for a varied raw food diet for your dog.

What is the difference between tripe and offal?

Whilst tripe refers specifically to the stomach of an animal, offal refers more generally to the organs and innards of an animal that aren’t considered as conventional cuts of meat. Offal is great tasting, well textured and highly nutritious for dogs. It can be found in a range of Nutriment raw foods in the form of beef heart, beef kidney and beef liver.

Where can I buy tripe for my dog?

That’s why Nutriment’s raw food products are first choice.
