Can puppies eat raw food?

Yes! After the initial feeding from mum, which generally lasts around three to four weeks, we recommend introducing our specially formulated raw weaning paste. It's safe for puppies to eat and digest, and it includes all of the macronutrients, amino acids and vitamins they need for healthy development.
Offering a small amount of our 100% British chicken paste after a milk feed is a great way to encourage the transition from milk to raw puppy food. Generally, this process takes place between weeks three and six of a puppy’s life, but this can vary depending on the dog.
From six weeks onwards, puppies can move on to our puppy dog food formula. Our bespoke recipes feature high-quality, 100% British chicken or beef, along with nutrient dense vegetables and superfoods.

Raw dog food for puppies: FAQs
How much food should I feed my puppy?
Puppies normally need to eat between 4-6% of their body weight at the time.
When your puppy is almost fully grown, you can gradually reduce the amount to eventually feed around 2-3% of their body weight. Typically, a smaller breed dog is fully grown at around 12 months, and larger breeds reach full growth at around 18 months.
Every dog is different. You know your dog best, so it might be worth tweaking their food portions until you're happy with their weight. In the meantime, you can use our handy raw feeding calculator for a strong start.
Is raw food good for puppies?
Yes! At any age, feeding raw means helping your dog to eat a biologically appropriate diet.
Each Nutriment raw recipe contains British meat, vegetables and superfoods - and nothing more. A raw diet contains no artificial ingredients, fillers or grains that you might find in other dog food, so you can enjoy peace of mind that it promotes full wellbeing.
Here are just a few of the benefits of raw dog food for puppies:
- Naturally tasty – Our raw puppy food mimics the type of foods that dogs have evolved to prefer. There are no bulking agents, enhancers or additives. Raw food will be something that your puppy naturally craves.
- Healthy growth – With high levels of calcium alongside all the necessary proteins and fats, a BARF diet promotes natural development.
- Improved digestion – Tummy troubles shouldn't be the norm for puppies. Feeding a BARF diet, you'll protect them from unwanted dietary side effects. You can expect your puppy to
have a soft, shiny coat, fresh breath and small, firm stools.
Which puppy food is best for a sensitive stomach?
If your puppy has a sensitive stomach, don't worry. Our food can still be a fantastic option, but you might need to take a little bit more time with switching to raw.
We use raw chicken for puppies in our weaning paste because it's a lean, protein-packed meat with high digestibility. However, we also know that poultry allergies are commonly found in dogs across the UK.
If you think that your puppy or adolescent dog has trouble digesting chicken, please feel free to contact us. We'll happily recommend different recipes and help you find what works.
Can I feed adult raw dog food for puppies?
Yes, after 16 weeks of age.
We recommend feeding our bespoke puppy raw food recipes while your puppy is between six and 16 weeks of age. While we use the same great ingredients, these meals are more finely ground to support a puppy's delicate digestive system.
Our adult raw dog food recipes contain more offal and bone, which help to sustain optimal joint strength and coat condition. Once you've fully transitioned your puppy onto our adult recipes, you can switch between their favourite flavours
Is raw chicken for puppies safe?
Yes. When raw chicken is properly prepared and stored, it's perfectly safe for puppies to eat.
At Nutriment, we adhere to strict hygiene standards and only source our meat from Red Tractor-approved farms. We understand that you may be concerned about bacteria in raw dog food, so it's worth knowing that:
- All Nutriment products are tested for salmonella and other bacteria to the full extent required by law.
- We ship all orders in polystyrene boxes, which keep the food frozen for two to three days.
Should I buy raw or fresh pet food for puppies?
Both raw and fresh food diets offer ample nutritional benefits to growing puppies. They also contain similar ingredients, but might be prepared and dished up slightly differently.
Reading our hygiene and storage guide is an important part of deciding whether raw or fresh food is right for your puppy (and for your lifestyle). While raw puppy food is quick and convenient to portion, fresh or homecooked meals might demand a lot more of your time.
A complete raw diet is best for your puppy, but only you can decide what's best for both
of you.
How often should you feed a puppy raw?
It depends. Each puppy is different, and while some breeds (like Labrador Retrievers) might seem hungry all the time, others may only prefer two meals a day.
To support their growth, it's typically recommended to feed young puppies smaller meals multiple times throughout the day. Many owners spread meals over three feedings up to six months and then reduce to two meals after they reach six months old.
How long should a puppy eat puppy food?
Transitioning to our adult foods from as early as 12 weeks has its benefits for all breeds.
Our adult foods are available in a wide variety of proteins, making mealtimes even more exciting for your young pup. Puppies go through hormone changes as they grow, which can affect their appetite. Offering different proteins from a young age will give you a good indicator of which products your pup relishes the most. Variety is the spice of life – even for our dogs!
